The Best Food Spots In Philly You Need To Try Now

Food: We can’t live without it! So the bros behind Instagram’s @PhillyNomBros (Gary Pica @gs_pica, Ryan Tegeler @gettinteggywitit) have collaborated with Wandering Bloggers @WanderingTravelers (Christopher Hill @christopherhill24), all of whom are graduates from Philly’s own Saint Joseph’s University,  to give us their top Philly food picks. Wandering Bloggers was able to get with PhillyNomBros who share a deep passion for food and culture, around Philadelphia, their home city. Whether it be checking out a local dive bar, exploring new restaurants around the city, or catching a game down at the stadiums, the NomBros are always finding new ways to get the most out of what the city has to offer, and the experiences that comes along with discovering new foods. For the NomBros, starting to blog and document food experiences just made sense. They consistently visit restaurants that they feel deserve more attention from the community with the hope of giving insight into the growing number of talented chefs opening up shop in all neighborhoods around Philly.

So if you’re looking to get your hands on Philly’s best grub, check out the PhillyNomBros’ top picks and suggestions:

Wok Works (@wokworks) -Spicy Fried Chicken Bao Buns

Philly Food

Wokworks is a laid-back noodle shop located in Rittenhouse Square. They have a simple formula: Source quality local ingredients and stir-fry them to perfection. The real stand-out on the menu, however, is the spicy fried chicken bao bun.

Federal Donuts (@federaldonuts) – Donuts & Fried chicken sandwich

Cookies & Cream Fancy Donuts

Philly Food

Federal fried chicken sandwich

Philly Food

A donut a day keeps the doctor away..so we go here A LOT of days before work. There’s nothing like a fresh hot donut and a cup of joe to start the morning. All of Federal Donuts’ locations serve fresh hot donuts to order, but also offer a variety of “special” donuts, with selections changing daily (like this Cookies n’ Cream donut above). If we’re feeling aggressive, we’ll even go back for lunch to enjoy the fried chicken sandwich that is doused with “Rooster” sauce. What’s rooster sauce, you may ask? Incredibleness.

Rex 1516 (@rex_1516) – The city-wide burger special

Philly Food

We frequent Rex 1516 more than any other restaurant in Philadelphia. Rex easily has the best weekly special – $15 for their speciality burger, a pint of Newbold IPA and a shot of Jim Beam. This city-wide special is available Monday through Wednesday. Rex isn’t serving up any ordinary burger, either.  Each week, Chef Justin Swaine (@swainstache) tests out one of his crazy concoctions or brings in a guest chef to whip up something unique. Not into burgers? From brunch to dinner, the menu at Rex 1516 is packed with an array of southern style cuisine.

Revolution Taco (@revolutiontaco) – Duck Tacos

Philly Food

Revolution Taco is the Rittenhouse neighborhood’s product of three food truck owners from Street Food Philly, Taco Mondo, and Say Cheese Philadelphia. This relatively new taco shop puts some exciting twists on tacos with unique menu items including homemade kimchi, confit duck, slow braised tongue, and smoked pork cheek. No wonder why they’re the taco the town. Sorry…had to.

Tom’s Dim Sum (@tomsdimsum) – Pork Soup Dumplings

Philly Food

When you’re in Philadelphia’s Chinatown neighborhood there are more than a few great choices if you’re in the mood for Dim Sum. However, Tom’s Dim Sum is where you need to go if you’re looking for the most authentic dining experience. Must-order items: Pork Soup Dumplings, Scallion Pancakes and the Shanghai noodles. Let’s be real though, any dim sum veteran will order every kind of dumpling on the menu.

Termini Bros (@termini_bros) – Cannolis

Philly Food

We don’t just dig this place because they are fellow “Bros”. If you are in the Italian Market or Reading Terminal Market, stopping by Termini Bros for a cannoli (or 3) is a necessity.

Big Gay Ice Cream (@biggayicecream)The Rocky Roadhouse

Philly Food

Go for the awesome name and stay for the great soft-serve ice cream. Big Gay puts a new twist on classic soft-serve by incorporating an astounding selection of toppings that makes for a truly unique and delicious finished product. In 2013, they launched their very own proprietary soft-serve ice cream developed in collaboration with Ronnybrook dairy farms – so you know they mean business.

Mac Mart (@themacmart) – Fried Chicken Mac ‘n Cheese Sandwich

Philly Food

Mac Mart opened up shop in January 2013 and is still Philly’s only Mac n’ Cheese food truck. Even better, they opened up their first storefront in Center City Philadelphia so you can ALWAYS get your mac on. Hands down, some of the best mac n’ cheese we’ve had to date, but what seals the deal is the option to add as many toppings (protein, crunch, sauce, etc.) to your bowl. Oh..and this fried chicken mac n’ cheese sandwich, a special menu item available only on certain occasions.

Florida Style Pizza (@floridastylepizza) – Pepperoni pizza

Philly Food

Despite its name, Florida Style Pizza has very little to do with the Sunshine State, except for the fact that its first owner wanted a “unique” addition to the name. Current owners Vinny and Anitra Golini pride themselves on serving up the original “inside-out pizza”, which we must agree, are little pockets of heaven, but it’s also a must to get this pepperoni pizza as well. Just look at it.

Lucky’s Last Chance (@luckyslastchance)The Mak Attack Burger

Philly Food

Located in Manayunk, Lucky’s Last Chance is an upbeat bar with unique beers on tap and absolutely mouthwatering food. Two of their specialities are burgers and mac ‘n cheese. Can’t decide which one you want? Follow our lead and get the Mak Attack burger so you can get the best of both worlds. We promise you won’t be disappointed.

Joe’s Steaks (@joessteaks) – Cheesesteak Wit Whiz

Philly Food

Most people will send you to South Philly for a classic Philly cheesesteak. We’re suggesting you head north to Joe’s Steaks. Located in the heart of Northern Liberties, Joe’s serves up one of the best cheesesteaks in town. (It’s also the only place you can get a milkshake to go with your steak. Big win.)

Cheu Noodle Bar (@cheunoodlebar) – Fried Chicken Ramen & Pizza Dumplings

Fried Chicken Ramen

Philly Food

***************************************************************

Pizza Dumplings

Philly Food

The owners of Cheu (self described as “two dudes from Philly”) don’t claim to have authentic Asian cuisine. What they do have is a menu brimming with personality and completely original creations. Stand outs on the menu include the Brisket Ramen, the Black Garlic wings and the Bacon & Kimchi Rice bowl. Also, if you are lucky enough to see their pizza dumplings on the menu – don’t think about it, just order them!

Kermit’s Bake Shoppe (@kermitsbakeshoppe) – Cupcakes & the Kerminator

Cupcake

Philly Food

The Kerminator

Philly Food

Kermit’s Bake Shoppe continues to be one of the first places we mention to people if they are looking for a unique food experience in Philly. Let’s get the obvious out of the way: yes, the classic baked goods are fantastic. Our favorite thing about Kermit’s, however, is their pizza. They have a unique selection (they once did a General Tso’s chicken-topped pizza) and they are huge! On Sundays, if you choose to pick up your pizza right from the shop in Graduate Hospital, it’s only $10. Kermit’s also makes some of the BEST bagels in Philadelphia. The kicker is you can only get them on the weekends.

Pub & Kitchen (@pubandkitchen) – The P&K Burger

Philly Food

P&K serves some amazing burgers and some other Euro-American dishes in Philly’s Rittenhouse neighborhood. It was even the first place winner for “Best Gourmet Burger” in PhillyMag’s 2014 edition of Best of Philly, and it would be super hard for us to disagree. Layers of bacon in between two cheesy patties on a perfectly soft bun..check this spot out ASAP! They even have baller brunch items on the weekends.

Grubhouse (@grubhousephilly) – Pork Roll Egg Rolls & the Three Little Pigs Grilled Cheese

Pork Roll Egg Rolls

Philly Food

***************************************************************

Three Little Pig Grilled Cheese

Philly Food

Grubhouse is a weekend brunch (usually very hungover) ritual for us. Not only is the staff at this South Philly diner extremely passionate and knowledgable about food, they are also some of the nicest people you’ll meet in Philadelphia. A major standout item on the menu is the Pork Roll Egg Rolls: Fried diced pork roll, scrambled eggs, and cheddar wrapped in a glorious egg roll. The rolls are topped off with American cheese sauce, scallions and homemade chili oil. A recent menu favorite of ours is the Three Little Pigs Grilled Cheese. It’s stuffed with pork roll, bacon, Carolina pulled pork, and American and cheddar cheese. Yes, this is real life.

Hershel’s East Side Deli – Pastrami Reuben Sandwich

Philly Food

Hershel’s is a classic Jewish deli located in Philly’s Reading Terminal Market, which is Philadelphia’s historic public market that is home to a variety of different restaurants and shops under one roof! Hershel’s whips up some HUGE sandwiches, that will not leave you hungry, for very reasonable prices. Our advice: don’t expect to be productive at work after devouring this pastrami reuben for lunch.

Bop (@bop_philly) – Cheesesteak Egg Rolls

Philly Food

This Korean-inspired American restaurant is just a couple of months old and is located right in the heart of Center City! It’s also one of Brent Celek’s restaurant ventures (Go Birds!). BOP is Korean for “rice” but the menu showcases a wide variety of Korean dishes with an American twist, like Korean Fried Chicken and Bibimbap. But given you’re in Philly, you obviously need to get these cheesesteak egg rolls because….cheesesteak.

American Sardine bar (@americansardine) – Fried Chicken Sandwich

Philly Food

“Sardine Bar” is located in Philly’s Point Breeze neighborhood, an “up and coming” area in the city that is attracting restaurateurs from all over the city. With 16 draft beers, a wide variety of craft cans, and an often-rotating menu, you will always find something enjoyable in this easy going environment. If it’s a nice day, be sure to check out the outdoor seating!

Bakeshop on 20th (@bakeshopon_20th) – Oreo Cookie Sandwich & the Brookie

Oreo Cookie Sandwich

Philly Food

***************************************************************

Brookie

Philly Food

Bakeshop on 20th is a small mom and pop bakery in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood of Philly that specializes in unique treats that will certainly bring you back to your childhood days. Aside from this giant Oreo and the “Brookie” (half brownie half chocolate chip cookie), this place whips up some awesome breakfast sandwiches/paninis and serves coffee and homemade soup seven days a week!

Spread Bagelry (@spreadbagelry) – “The Classic” Breakfast Sandwich

Philly Food

Montreal Style Wood Oven Bagels in Philadelphia. Enough Said. But seriously..this place is home to one of our favorite breakfast sandwiches. The bagels are literally made from scratch right in front of you as you wait in the line that, on weekends, is out the door and down the block. But don’t fret. There’s live music outside the front door on Saturdays and Sundays from 11-1:30 to make the wait even more worth it than it already is!
